Lolegaon Travel Guide

Lolegaon is an unconventional tourist destination at a distance of 24 km from Lava and 95 km from Siliguri. Local people call it as Kaffer. Swirling slopes decked with Cyprus and Dhupi trees makes the landscape beautiful. This tourist destination promises exquisite hinterlands to all who visit. Tourists are all victims of the magnetic action that the place exhales.

Lolegaon is located on the heel of a Himalayan ridge. Majority of the 5000 people here are Lepchas. At 1675 meters, Lolegaon falls in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal.

Adorned with orchids and other species of flowers, Lolegaon not only provides a refreshing breath but is also a delight to sore eyes and mind. The area houses an enormous variety of birds. At this heritage forest, Centuries old Oak and Cypress gives an extravagant “Canopy Bridge” made of wood. It is 180 meters in length, hanging, and provides an enchanting exposure. The serene calmness of the village devoid of any kind of noise gives any person the much needed peace that we all search for throughout our lifespan.

On a clear day, Kanchenjunga has an all-encompassing view from Lolegaon. Forest department had started promoting the village as an eco-tourism site. A part of the forest has also been declared as a Heritage site to draw more tourists to it.

Green tailed Sunbird, Himalayan Bulbul, Rey Bashchat, Verditer Flycatcher, Long tailed Shrike tri color, Whiskered Yuhina, Blue winged Minla, Tree Pipit, Rafous backed Sibia, welcome the bird watchers in Loleygaon. On a clear day, one can see the Himalayan peaks like Kumbhakarna, Kabru, Talong, Pandim, Kanchenjunga, Jopuno, Shimbho, Narsing, and Sinialuchu

How to Reach Lolegaon

  • Air— Bagdogra is the nearest airport. New Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, Guwahati have regular connectivity to Bagdogra. Lolegaon is 104 km from here. You can hire a car to reach Lolegaon from Bagdogra.
  • Rail—New Jalpaiguri is the nearest rail head. It is well-connected with Chennai, Delhi and Kolkata. Lolegaon is 95 km from here. You can hire a car to reach Lolegaon from New Jalpaiguri station.
  • Road—Reach Siliguri by road. Lolegaon is at a distance of 95 km from Siliguri and 80 km from Darjeeling.

  • Summer (Apr to Jun) — Temperatures are mild and range between (4°C) to (24°C)
  • Monsoon (Jul to Sep) — Regular rainfall happens. This is not a good season for tourists

What to See in Lolegaon

Canopy Walk

It refers to a series of hanging bridges, situated centrally in Lolegaon. With a total length measuring 180m, it forms an ideal destination for nature walk. While being on the bridge, one can have at a glimpse at the depth of the heritage forests. The spot has been named so due to the canopy of the elegant huge canopy of trees that may be seen here.

Jhandi Dara

Jhandi Dara is a beautiful forested region, well known for its dense greenery, biodiversity and serenity. One can find here mainly coniferous trees like pine and sal. Many rare and elegant avian species may be seen here, making it a Birdwatcher’s paradise. In addition to that some special tea plantations can be observed. The woodland provides a morbid view of the snow capped mountain ranges of Himalayas and the attractive Kanchenjunga peak. The spot is also called Sunrise Point

Kafer Village

6 km from Lolegaon lays Kafer Village.  You can almost touch the clouds here sprawling against the greenery that lies around.

Lying amidst open valleys, 16 km from Lolegaon is Charkhol Village. Amidst the natural extravagance tourists get the ambiance of a village. Thus, the number of tourists has only been maximized in recent times.

Samthar Village

At 1800 feet Samthar is a paradise for nature lovers. 30 kms from Loleygaon, Samthar is the meeting point of Mountains, rivers and forests. It is a 12 km trek, along the bank of river Relikhola is Sepkhola. A rope way in Sepkhola connects 27 miles to Samko.
Trekking through the dense forests along 8kms of mountainous roads one reaches Panbu. Amazing views of Kanchenjunga along with lots of mountainous birds are the gifts on the way. For the trekking lovers, another surprise awaits 4 km from Panbu in a small village called Joretar
