Kamarpukur is famous as the birthplace of Sri Ramakrishna. He was one of the most famous saint-philosopher of Bengal. Kamarpukur is a popular place among his many devotees. He was born here and he spent his entire childhood in the township. Lord Ramakrishna began his journey towards spirituality from this place.

According to legend, Ramakrishna was born near a husking pedal under the shed. This place has been preserved with care and in the year 1951, a marble statue of the philosopher was established here. The statue was carved by Nandalal Basu. The Kamarpukur Math who is responsible for preserving the place also carefully nurtured his home and the mango tree which Ramakrishna planted.

Visitors can actually take a peek in his drawing room which is re-designed as his bedroom. The spiritual connection of this place cannot be missed. You will find thousands of devotees crowding this place. Sri Ramakrishna was born in a poor family in this small township in 1836. He was born in a Brahmin family. Apart from the spiritual connection, this place is known for its natural beauty and beautiful landscape.

The greenness of the place will soothe your tired eyes and the mind will be refreshed. The math in Kamarpukur has been built by  Ramakrishna Math.

It has accommodation for travelers, a library, a school and also a dispensary. A few minutes away from the math, there is a place called Haldar pukur which has been re-excavated and is visited by many tourists

How to Reach Kamarpukur

  • By Air – If you are catching a flight land at Kolkatat. Kolkata is 104 km away from Kamarpukur and you can hire a private car which are quite abundant outside the airport and head off for Kamarpukur.
  • By Rail – Those who are planning to travel by train will have to catch a train from Howrah Railway Station and go till Tarakeshwar through Arambagh. From Tarakeshwar, you need to take a bus to Kamarpukur. Private taxis and cars are also available.
  • By Road – Private cars are available for hire from Kolkata which will take you to Kamarpukur. There are good roads till Kamarpukur. You can also take the state transport buses which start every morning from Kolkata and takes 4 to 5 hours to reach Kamarpukur. If you are traveling from Burdwan, which is another popular junction, it will take one and half hour to reach your destination.

Ramakrishna Math in Kamarpukur was built in the year of 1951 by the holy monks of the Ramakrishna Math. This beautiful, serene and peaceful place is idolized and by millions of followers and disciples all around the world.  The math has a beautiful marble statue of Thakur Shri Shri Ramakrishna. It is established inside the beautiful Kamarpukur Ramakrishna Math complex. The place has become an important pilgrimage for the devotees and the tourists.

The beautiful and divine statue of Shri Ramakrishna Paramhansa is actually planned by the famous painter and sculptor Shri Nandalal Basu. This beautiful math of Kamarpukur is embraced with multiple activities.

A newly constructed guest house inside the Math encourages the visitors to stay within the divinity. It also has a large library, a school and a small dispensary which have become the place of necessity in Kamarpukur Ramakrishna Math. After the excavation of the Halder Pukur tank this math has become the beauty spots of Kamarpukur

There is a small house at Kamarpukur where Thakur Shri Shri Ramakrishna took his birth on the 18th February of 1836. This house exists still in the present time and anyone from the village can show the directions of this holy house if asked.

Ramakrishna was born in a poor Brahmin family and his birth name was Gadadhar Chattopadhyay. He used to be called as Gadai by his childhood friends and his teachers. Thousands of people still gather to his house to remember the divine philosophies spread by him and his disciples. The birthday festival of Shri Ramakrishna is observed in a large manner by the Ramakrishna Mission authority near his ancestral house and it falls on the months of Phalgun Shukla Dwitiya (the second day after the dark moon in the month of March) every year. Devotees and disciples of Ramakrishna Mission from all around the world come to attend this celebration with their families.

This is one of the holiest places in Kamarpukur which is resounded with the philosophical speeches of Thakur Shri Shri Ramakrishna. It is the place where he used to meet the disciples and also instruct them about every single thing. He also used to share his spiritual experiences with everyone. There is still a mango tree alive which was planted by Thakur himself and it is faced towards the eastern side of the parlor and still yields fruit in definite seasons

Mother Tank is known as the major water source for agricultural activities in Kamarpukur and Jairambati. According to stories, Sarada Ma used to spend long hours on the banks of the lake cutting grass for the cows. This is known as one of the holy places by the disciples of Ramakrishna.

What to Do

A little away from Kamarpukur is the famous Jairambati, another popular place among the devotees of Sri Ramakrishna. And if you have hired a private car, you can also head for Tarakeshwar and visit the Taraknath Temple which is famous among the devotees of Lord Shiva. The architecture of the temple which represents the typical ‘atchala’ includes a natmandir and an elaborate front. Every year during monsoon, this place is full of devotees who come with the intention of providing water to Lord Shiva. It is said that the temple was built after a devotee saw dream of a shiva linga near the jungles of Tarakeshwar

Where to Eat

Kamarpukur is a small township. There are hardly any restaurants or eateries in this place, except some small tea shops where you will get snacks and beverages. Those who are on a day trip generally take a halt at Tarakeshwar where you will have ample eateries and restaurants. Most of the joints serve basic meals like rice, vegetables, pulses and a fish curry

There is nothing much that you can buy from here except few memento and pictures of Shri Ramakrishna

Get Around

If you have time, you may simply walk around. Otherwise, you will have to rely on the age-old rickshaws which will take you to different places of interest in Kamarpukur.
