Chapramari Travel Guide

Chapramari Sanctuary is 12 km off National Highway 31 from Khunia More on the way to Jaldapara and can also be approached from the meter gauge railway stations to Chalsa or Nagrakata.  It is situated just on the northern side of Gorumara National park. It is nearly 70 kilometers from Siliguri and about 20 kilometers from Chalsa.Visit to the greenery of the nature and resting a few days and nights in the midst of forests is just refreshing. Amongst the fast flowing rivers and wildlife definitely instill new life and inspiration among the visitors.

Chapramari Sanctuary is in the Khunia beat and is famous for Bison and Elephant herds. With fascinating diversity of flora and fauna and the vast texture of massive trees sheltering varieties of orchids will definitely impress the guest. Booking has to be done in advance as accommodations are limited and the rush is always on. The watchtower is the best place to observe wild animals as they visit the salt pit near the water body prepared close to the watchtower.

Most common animals in the area are one horned Indian rhino, elephant, Indian bison, leopards and deer. The national parks and sanctuary remains closed from 15th June to 15th September each year. Birding, angling, tribal tours are few of the options for guest to enjoy and there can be other options like religious tour, tribal tour to Cooch Behar and Bhutan. With a fascinating diversity of flora and fauna and with various other options this park is one of the tourist hotspot of the region. The vast texture of massive trees sheltering varieties of orchids and resounded with echo of birds and wild animals make it an ideal place to spend a vacation.

The surroundings and the climate make it a veritable paradise for lovers of nature and eco-tourism. There are over half a dozen of watchtower like Medhla, Jatraprasad etc. Chapramari is the best place to observe wild animals as animals come regularly to the salt reservoir just below the tower or the water body close to this towers.

There is an old Forest Bungalow built within a dense forest. You have the whole jungle to yourself when you stand in the Bungalow’s balcony watching over the waterhole and salt lick where Bison, Elephants, Rhinos, Monkeys, Peacocks and a whole lot of unknown birds come to quench their thirst. But, this is not all! From the Chapramari Forest Rest House (FRH), you can have a panoramic view of one of the oldest jungles of the Dooars region with the mighty mountain at its backdrop. A night in Chapramari with the mysterious sounds and squeaks of the jungle dwellers would give you the real thrill of spending a night in one of the oldest jungles of India.

How to Reach Chapramari

  • By Air — The nearest airport to Chapramari is the Bagdogra Airport. After reaching Bagdogra, you need to hire a car to reach Lataguri which is the base for visiting Chapramari.
  • By Rail — New Jalpaiguri railway station is the nearest rail-head connecting Chapramari to major Indian cities and towns. After reaching New Jalpaiguri, you need to hire a car to reach Lataguri which is the base for visiting Chapramari.
  • By Road — Chapramari and Lataguri is connected by road with Siliguri and other places in North Bengal. Various government and private buses and taxis are available from Siliguri to Lataguri.

Forest safari is allowed inside Chapramari National Park. The rules and routes have changed several times over the years. You must spend the whole day watching the animals visiting the waterhole for their drink and the birds hopping from one branch of the tree to another. You are in the middle of the jungle and do not miss the thrill of it. There is a watch-tower adjacent to the Chapramari Forest Rest House where visitors come during the mornings and evenings. The Khunia watch tower and the Rest House offers the same view of the salt lick and the waterhole.

What to Do

  • If you love nature, then this is your place. As soon as you enter the forest, you will see a wide variety of trees like aamloki, rudrapalash, rubber trees, rupasi and others. Bird watching can be a really exciting activity here with plenty of birds frolicking in the trees.
  • You can sit idle on the balcony of the Chapramari FRH with a cup of tea enjoying the forest and the distant hills spotting wildlife around the waterhole and salt lick.
  • In the evenings, you can watch the tribal dance and when the night falls and the Chapramari forest is bathed in moonlight, you can see the Elephant herd munching away the forest foliage beside your bungalow

Where to Eat

The Chapramari Forest Rest House is the only accommodation available inside Chapramari forest. For staying there, you have to carry your own ration, which will be prepared by the caretaker of the bungalow as per your request. There is no other shops or eateries in the jungle

What to Buy

The place is not for the shopaholics and there is nothing you can buy from here.

Get Around

To get around the place and visit other places of interests adjacent to Chapramari, the only option for tourists is a vehicle on rental. The forest safari is organized in rented gypsies.
