Jairambati Travel Guide

Just 7 km away from Kamarpukur, one can visit Jairambati which is famous as the birth place of Maa Sarada. In the year 1853, Sarada Devi was born in this village, and because of its scared connection, this place is revered among the disciples of Sri Ramakrishna.

It is a small township in the district of Bankura and you can still find the peaceful way of life in a village evident in Jairambati. Also, if you want to enjoy nature in its pure unadulterated form, Jairambati is the place to be. The simplicity of the place will enthrall you, and you will find it as an ideal destination far away from the hue and cry of the city.

At the centre of Jairambati is the Matri Mandir which is also popularly known as the famous Jairambati Math. This is an amazing temple which designates the birth place of Ma Sarada. This was built by Swami Saradananda in the year 1923. As you enter the temple you will find the ancestral home of Ma Sarada on the right hand side.

There is another house which is comparatively new on the opposite side of the old home. Close to Matri Mandir, one can see the Mayer Ganga. Agricultural activities in and around this area is aptly supported by the supply of water from Mother Tank. You will have a homely feel to this place.

Some of the major spots in this small township which are famous among the tourists are a temple which is dedicated to Sundara Narayana Dharma Thakur. You can also visit Koalpara which is also well-known among the various spots in Jairambati.

How to Reach Jairambati

  • By Air – If you are catching a flight land at Kolkatat. Kolkata is 104 km away from Jairambati and you can hire a private car which are quite abundant outside the airport and head off for Jairambati.
  • By Rail – Those who are planning to travel by train will have to catch a train from Howrah Railway Station and go till Tarakeshwar through Arambagh. From Tarakeshwar, you need to take a bus to Jairambati. Private taxis and cars are also available.
  • By Road – Private cars are available for hire from Kolkata which will take you to Jairambati. There are good roads till Jairambati. You can also take the state transport buses which start every morning from Kolkata and takes 4 to 5 hours to reach Jairambati. If you are traveling from Burdwan, which is another popular junction, it will take one and half hour to reach your destination.

  • Summer (Apr to Jun) — Temperatures are mild and range between (24°C) to (36°C)

What to See In Jairambati

In 1923 this house was constructed in the place where Maa Sarada was born. Inside the temple you will see a marble statue of Maa Sarada. It is the architecture of the building which is considered as the highlight of the temple. There is a small Shiva linga which is also worshiped inside the Matri Mandir

Nutan Bari or New House

The New House or Nutan Bari is positioned on the western side of Punya Pukur of Sacred Tank. This sacred tank was excavated by Swami Saradananda, so that disciples of Sri Ramakrishna had no difficulty. The rooms have straw roofs and walls are made of mud. This is considered as a retreat for those who want some seclusion from their busy lives. There is a small image of Maa Sarada in one of the rooms

Puratan Bari or Old House (Ancestral home):

This is the ancestral house of Maa Sarada. It is said that she lived here for a major portion of his life with her brother Prasanna Mukhopadhyay. Many of Maa Sarada’s disciples took Brahmacharya and Sannyas here

Koalpara

This village is famous for housing the Ramakrishna Yogashrama. Travelers can have secluded accommodation here. It is known to do many welfare works among the villagers and they have charity wing which distributes clothes, books to the needy. Very close to Jairambati is Bishnupur which is famous for its terra cotta temples. You can hire a car and visit this place. Plus this place has an ancient heritage and if you love history, you will find Bishnupur to your liking. Some of the other places close by is Kamarpukur which is known as the birthplace of Sri Ramakrishna. Take a trip to this place, and you will know why it is considered as scared among Ramakrishna’s disciples

Where to Eat

Jairambati is a small township. There are small tea shops where you will get tea and snacks. For a full-course meal, you have to eat in a restaurant either at Bishnupur or Tarakeshwar. Meals comprising of rice, pulses, vegetables, fish or egg curry are available in Bishnupur and Tarakeshwar. So, if you are planning a day trip to Jairambati, you will have to go back and eat lunch in either of the two places
