From Munnar there are multiple hiking/trekking options available with different difficulty level – beginner to moderate and then difficult.

Suggested Trekking and Hiking Routes:
Beginners – Chummar, Idukki Dam.

Moderate – Chithirapuram

For experts – Chokramudi, Kannan Devan Hills.

Season: Trekking season in Munnar is between Mar to May and Oct to Jan

Tips: Please ensure to prepare yourself by running, cycling etc. at least 2-3 weeks before starting your trek.

Tea Garden and Factory

A trip to Munnar is not complete as long as you do not visit a tea garden and factory. Two major tea companies who offer a guided tour for the tourists are –

Kanan Devan Tea Museum – Kanan Devan is one of the biggest tea plantation companies in the Western Ghat region. It offers a guided tour for the tourists to its tea factory and museum where you can see how different types of processed tea leaves are produced from the green leaves. You will also get a chance to see the tea museum which details the history of tea plantation in the area. Along with the museum, they also have a outlet to sell different variety of tea produced by them.

Lockhart Tea Factory and Museum – This is located at a distance of 30 minutes from Munnar town. Though Kanan Devan does not allow, at Lockhart, they will allow you to walk through their tea plantations and have a very unique experience. Their tea factory is also less modern compared to Kanan Devan and you can understand the tea making process more clearly.

Boating

Boating is a very popular activity among the tourists visiting Munnar. In addition to Mattupetty Dam, boating options are also available at Kundala Dam Lake.
However, both paddle boats and speed boats are available at Mattupetty. Generally, speed boat trips are of 15 minutes duration while the paddle boats are rented on time hourly basis.
There are certain rules that tourists need to follow. Firstly, each boat can accommodate up to 5 person. Secondly, Child above 4 years of age is considered as an adult. During the boat ride, you can enjoy the lush green surrounding mountains and feel the silence of the nature.

Kerala is famous for its spice gardens and you have a chance to see a plenty of them while traveling around Munnar. Though it will be a good experience if you book a guided tour to see one of the gardens. A local guide will take you around the plantation and show the different types of spices in the tress. Most of them have a selling counter attached to the garden where they sell these spices and also a host of other Ayurvedic medicines which can cure a variety of diseases.
