Eravikulam National Park was set up in 1978 to preserve Nilgiri Tahr (Nilgiri Ibex). As a result, currently this national park has the largest population of the Nilgiri Thars in the world. Nilgiri Thars are surefooted wild goats living in herds. They live on the steep and black rocky slopes of the Anaimudi Mountains. Additionally, there are elephants, sambars, gaurs and macaques available here. Moreover, there are occasionally visible leopards and tigers also. The scenery is around the place is magnificent, though the walks into the forest are very steep and strenuous.

Anamudi Peak

Anamudi Peak is the highest in South India. It has a height of 2700 m. The peak is situated inside the Eravikulam National Park. It is a perfect destination for the trekking lovers. Anamudi peak is rich with flora and fauna. Nilgiri Thar is found here along with sambars, gaurs, macaque and leopards.

Mattupetty Dam

Mattupetty Dam is situated 13 km away from Munnar and has an average altitude of 1700 m above the sea level. The scenery all around here is a perfect view to the eyes. Mattupetty is also famous for tea plantation. The lush green surroundings make the place more beautiful. The cattle shed farm here is very famous. Boating in the dam is one of the best liked activities here.

Top Station is located 32 km away from Munnar. The average altitude of this point is 1700 m above the sea level and it is the highest point on Munnar to Kodiakanal road. The main attraction of this place is the beautiful panoramic view of neighboring Tamil Nadu. Neelakurinji flowers are another major attraction of the place. It is grown in vast areas and enhances the beauty of the place.

It is a very scenic spot, situated 18 km far from Munnar. It is called so as one can hear his or her own sound resonating within the silent hills.

It is set in the nearby areas of tea and coffee gardens. The encircling hills make it an ideal visiting venue, not only for nature lovers but also trekkers. It has a certain point called vantage point from where one may be delighted to get an elegant view of Munnar along with the adjacent valleys.

It was constructed as a part of a hydroelectric project in 1946. It is at a distance of 21 km from Munnar and is reportedly the first arch dam in the Asian continent. It is also known as Sethuparwathi dam.

Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary

It is located in the rain shadow areas of Western Ghats. Thus the land is dry and the plantations are thorny scrub forests with mix of deciduous varieties and grasslands. The landscape is variable and undulating with plains, rocks and cliffs.

Sandalwood Forest

These are found in Marayoor, a rain shadow village and the Wayanad hills. The limited rainfall conditions are favorable for the growth of sandalwood. So the region is suffuse with the aroma of sandalwood. There is also a sandal wood factory here.

Nyaymakkad Falls

This picturesque spot is 10 km away from Munnar. Here one may find lovely waterfalls where water flows downhill in layers, traversing a total height of 1600 m. It is a picnic spot cum trekking destination.
