Kalpa Travel Guide

Kalpa is a small town of the Kinnar circuit in the state of Himachal Pradesh in India. It has an average elevation of 2,960 meters. It is located on the banks of river Sutlej. Kinnar Kailash, the winter home of lord Shiva lies just across the river.

The place is inhabited by Kinnauris. This is the most amazing town of Kinnaur. The locals follow both Hinduism and Buddhism as a result both monasteries and temples are found around the town. Kalpa is famous for its high quality Apple orchards. Along with Apple orchard there are pine and nut forests. The sunset and sunrise of Kalpa is an unforgettable event to watch. On the southern side of the town which is not so crowded one can see the wildlife of the place and watch a variety of birds. Himalayan bear and deer is a common sight here.

Kalpa has all the attributes of a heritage town. Gem of local craftsmanship can be seen at the Narayan Nagani temple. The important festival of the place is Fulekh. It is celebrated every year on the month of August. The celebrations are performed in a grand way. The main motto of the festival is to promote friendship.  Various types of programs and events are held. The Bhusur caps and the Kinnaur shawls is very famous.  The road to Kalpa passes through coniferous forests, though there are apple orchards around the hamlet of  Pangi.

Many adventurous trekking routes start from here. The temperature around here can drop way below the freezing point in the winters. Heavy woolen are advised to tourists who visit the place in the winters. Woolens are also advised to all the tourists who decide to thong the place in the summer. The best of the hamlet is to be experienced at the sunrise. The crimson rays of the sun, touching the snow clad peaks are surely a delight to every tourist’s eye

How to Reach Kalpa

  • Air — The nearest airport is Chandigarh. Once you reach there, get a bus or hire a car for Kalpa
  • Rail — Nearest big station is Kalka. From Kalka, hire a car to reach Shimla or Kalpa.
  • Road — From Shimla, hire a car for your entire Kinnaur tour. Alternately take a bus from Shimla to reach Kalpa

Kalpa Temperature:

  • Summer (Apr to Jun) – Temperatures are mild and range between (6°C) to (22°C)
  • Monsoon – (Jul to Aug) – Regular rainfall happens. This is not a good season for tourists
  • Winter – (Sep to Mar) – Temperatures are low and range between (-5°C) to (21°C)
  • Best Time to Visit – April to May and Sep to Oct are the best season for tourism

Recong Peo is the district headquarters and is quite a busy little market town and administrative center. The monastery commemorates the Dalai Lama’s Kalachakra Sermon delivered herein the year of 1992
